10 New Year Resolutions for Your Pet
This entry was posted on 2018-01-04.
Yes! Your furkid can have New Year resolutions too, but they need your help to achieve them. So, how exactly can you improve your pet's quality of life in the new year? Here are 10 simple resolutions to ensure your pet has it's best year yet!
1) Exercise Portion Control
Are you paying attention to the amount of food you feed your pet in one serving? Good quality pet foods have serving suggestions that are based on your pet's size/weight or breed. These serving suggestions are different depending on what brand of pet food you are feeding. This year, make sure you are feeding your pet the correct portion size to avoid over or underfeeding.
2) Improve Diet
Just as humans have different nutritional requirements at different life stages, so do our furry friends. As your pet ages another year, ensure they are being fed a diet that is age-appropriate. Kittens and puppies need to be fed food that consists of growth formula to fulfill their need for more calories. Young adult to adult pets (1 - 6 years) experience a decrease in metabolism and therefore require a diet with fewer calories. As pets reach the age of 7+ their diets needs to change based on their activity levels, body condition, and overall health. You may consider feeding a 'senior diet' which, depending on the brand, may consist of less protein or softer kibble for easier digestion.
3) Order Pet Food on a Schedule
To make your (and your pet's) life so much easier, order food on your Schedule. Instead of making last minute runs to the pet or vet shop, have your pet's food and treats delivered to your door when you need it. 4) Consider Pet Insurance
Now is the time to consider getting insurance for your pet. Unfortunately, accidents or illness can happen to your pet at any time and we all know that vet care isn't cheap! For only a small premium each month, cover and protect your pet this year.
5) More Exercise and Play
Yes, we know you've heard it before - your pet needs exercise and play! Some breeds need more exercise than others, but all pets need a certain level of physical activity. This new year, take the opportunity to get your pet (and yourself!) into a healthier, physical routine that consists of exercise or play at least 3 times a week.
6) Protect Your Pet Against Parasites
Be sure to guard your pet against not only fleas, but also ticks, mites, and worms. Your pet can be affected by parasites in many ways, ranging from simple-irritation to life-threatening disease if left untreated. Some parasites can even be transmitted from your pet to you and your family. Use Milbemax to de-worm your adult dog or cat every 3 months. For dogs, use a product like Bravecto or Nexgard to keep ticks, fleas, and mites at bay for up to 12 weeks. For cats, you can use Frontline or a flea collar to keep them purring throughout 2018.
7) Brush your pet's teeth
Brushing your pet's teeth may seem like a hassle for you and your pet, but proper maintenance can save money in the long-run! Starting this January, brush your pet's teeth at least once a week to prevent a build-up of plaque and tartar that lead to Gingivitis and other diseases. Use toothpaste and a toothbrush specifically formulated for cats and dogs.
8) Groom your pet daily
Brush your pet's coat daily to control shedding and stimulate healthy hair growth. Keep your pet's coat sparkling and use the vacuum cleaner less this year!
9) Clean bowls, beds and toys
Make sure your pet has their most hygienic year yet by keeping their bowls, beds, and toys clean and germ-free! Many pet parents do not wash their pet's bowls frequently, leaving a breeding ground for all types of bacteria. After every meal, rinse your pet's bowls out with hot, soapy water. Clean your pet's beds and toys at least once every 2 weeks.
10) Book a date with the vet
If you can't remember the last time your adult pet went to the vet, book a date in your calendar right now! Adult pets should be booked in for a yearly check-up with the vet for early detection of any illness or injury. Senior pets should be booked in for bi-yearly check-ups.
Fulfill these 10 resolutions and make 2018 your pet's best year yet!
