Dog’s Aggression at Meal Times

Disrupting a dog during its mealtime is the same as taking a sweet from a child or disturbing the boys while they watch rugby. Specialists state that food aggression is a very common behavior in dogs; the causes vary from immoderate guarding and domination to general instinct.

Note that you should never disturb your dog when eating.

Just to make a point you may have tried to take your dogs food away while he is eating. This seems rather unjust and senseless. I’m sure you wouldn’t be very happy if someone took your food away while you were eating? It is therefore important to ensure that your dog gets used to having people (family members) around while he is eating.

This is how you can teach your dog to get used to others being around while he is eating:

1.     Take your puppy’s meal and separate it into two or three small parts. Once your dog has finished with the portion, remove the bowl, instantly add another first portion and give it back to him. Keep doing this until you have finished the prescribed amount.

2.     While he is eating add food. Then remove yourself and carry on with something else. Come back before he is done, with his favorite treat. This will teach your dog to associate a human’s presence while eating as something that is far more positive, creating a rewarding experience rather then an intimidating one.

3.     A dog that isn’t very hungry is unlikely to be aggressive. As this is the case it is much better for you to feed your dog two times a day, keeping him content for longer. It’s important to note that puppies require three meals daily, but your vet can advise you on a meal plan.
